about

My debut album “Diary Of A Plastic Box”, later released in 2008 as this expanded double CD “The Complete Diary Of A Plastic Box”.

It’s made up (in a kind of travelogue form) of spontaneous little musical creations and expressions layered up almost entirely on my newly acquired Korg M1 workstation of the time. Recorded in solitude either in hotel rooms, dressing rooms - even in band buses - while on the road working for others. It was a cathartic release for my own musical impulses to form and blossom, and I was involved with the creation of these little snapshots almost daily - documenting impressions and experiences as I went along.

Well documented here is a period I was really starting to form improvisationally on keyboards. I had found (via the extremely flexible pitch bend on the Korg M1) a way to assimilate “double stopping” - a technique most notably certain saxophone players have employed, giving the effect of a note played and immediately repeated afterwards but with a slightly different sonic. For me it was achieved by bending notes with the pitch bend stick, and (because it was so loose) I could reach this desired affect with no glide. Just like saxophone. I’ve not found a keyboard controller where I can achieve that in the same way since.

My dear brother Allan Holdsworth had a real affection for this record especially, which initially surprised me. It occurred to me later that he had perhaps enjoyed and related essentially to the “in solitude” aspect inherent to it, and that he had felt to perhaps explore a project an little akin to it himself one day. (His later, lovely “Flat Tire” release might have reflected something of that notion. Who knows.)

Out of the many reviews back I especially enjoyed this quote from Jo-Ann Greene of Allmusic.com

“The album is a highly personal pastiche of short instrumental pieces, each distinctive and a world unto itself. A number of the musical themes presented within are revisited on the second disc, which is “a continuation of the journey,” as Husband explains in the sleeve notes. Taken together, the set is highly evocative, an exploration of mood-inducing music that feels cohesive, even though it’s quite diverse. Chuffing trains steam through Toytown, England’s rich green pastures are recalled, mice scamper gaily across keyboards, exhilarating jazz legends are revisited (as are the pomp-rock glories of yesteryear), and Christmas comes to a mall near you. Creating mostly in an avant-garde jazz mode, Husband folds into the arrangements a plethora of other styles, from jazz fusion to ambient chill. A number of pieces are lead synth-driven, while rhythms in unusual time signatures play an important role in others. All told, Diary is an intriguing set, one that jazz fans in particular will find fascinating.”
