about

Atmosphere is a key aspect for me in my musical endeavour, whether it's in the pop, jazz, classical or fusion realms, and here I had a chance to explore exactly that. Consistent with the approach employed on my solo piano recordings "The Things I See" and "A Meeting Of Spirits" - reinterpreting music by Allan Holdsworth and John McLaughlin respectively - I'm featuring here a cross-section from the two albums I was commissioned to arrange, record and produce by friend and legendary Russian popular music composer Alexander Shulgin. My gratitude goes out to him now for allowing me now to feature this selection of some of the material here on my Bandcamp.

Having performed a good selection of classical piano music by several Russain composers in my youth, and was so often enthralled and overwhelmed by it's beauty and power. I allowed the essence and impressions of some of that to permeate and influence the character of my treatments on Alexander's melodies here. Just as I allowed myself in the preparation of both the aforementioned album recordings of my own, I pretty much started again - re-contextualising, (of course, totally reharmonising) and ultimately conveying the melodies in a vastly different presentation to the ones respectively in their original form.

To work at my best, I let all my influences and inspirations seep up through the door of imagination and reveal themselves. As a result, in the first track you hear the Indian (crossover) nod to John McLaughlin's (1970s era) Shakti, some essences of Chick Corea perhaps and certainly all the lingering classical influences from my beginnings. What I do certainly seems to form an identifiable shape, so all in all I let all I happen to be about in also.

It's creative work of joy for me, to reinterpret. If you would be interested to check out the two recordings ("Alexander Shulgin's Songbook - Triptych Part 2" and "Skazka Part 2 - Skazka For Boys") in their entirety you can find both titles on Apple Music and Spotify.

I hope you enjoy it.
