about

My amazing band from 2007 to 2009 featuring Richard Turner (trumpet), Julian Siegel (saxes) and Michael Janisch (bass).

I wanted a jazz quartet of my own at this point - to lead it, write and arrange for it and get to play in it.I wanted an edgy, driving jazzy context but with more of a ‘chamber’ presence to it - no harmony of a guitar or piano (except for the small amount of piano I would perform in certain pieces). At the root of what this band was about was my wish to pay homage to the great drummer/ bandleaders/ composers I grew up listening to and being inspired by as a youngster - Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Jack DeJohnette’s formations, Tony Williams' various innovative groups and of course Elvin Jones and The Jazz Machine were all at the forefront of my inspiration here.

Our one and only studio album (“Hotwired”, 2009) is a great memento, but on recent discovery and subsequent review of some live audio I had kicking around of some of the band's dates I became extremely excited with what I heard. The band is on fantastic and electric form here, so to make some of these recordings available to you now on my Bandcamp page feels great now. This quartet was very special to me.

As a bonus - along with the live recordings from two jazz club locations in London featured here - there are two (also previously unreleased) extra, left over tracks from the “Hotwired” studio sessions. It’s my hope that you enjoy all these tracks as much as I have enjoyed revisiting and compiling them all.

* Special Note: This album also pays testament to the astonishing talents of our young star trumpet player Richard Turner, who tragically died at the age of 27 in August 2011. What a future he have had in front of him. Nevertheless, I will always feel proud this beautiful young soul came on board with us and gave his best at all times. Thank you and rest in piece dear Richard.
