Interview with Gary and Friends (Free Download)

about

Okay, so on the 25th of November 2020 THIS happened!

My dear friend and colleague Markus Reuter kindly gave over the 20th episode of his Living The Dream series in entirety to an in-depth interview with me, and and as a means for us to celebrate and promote the launch of my new Bandcamp page. Under the auspices of (my equally dear friend and longtime colleague) Leonardo Pavkovic / MoonJune Records this new Bandcamp platform is fast establishing itself as becoming the one and only portal into previously unpublished music of mine, older releases, new material and suchlike - the vast majority of which isn’t available anywhere else.

Anyway, as we drew nearer to the date, Leonardo suggested to me I should invite some special friends and musician colleagues to help bolster the sense of ‘a real event‘ for this interview. So I did! And, not dreaming a vast amount of them would actually end up joining us, I ran the idea past quite a few of them. And guess what!?

Not only just about EVERYONE who I invited came on board, but many journalists, friends, longtime fans, listeners from all over the globe joined us too!

This whole event in fact reflected how I love the best and most successful music to materialise and manifest between artists - born of natural meeting points in terms of musical aspiration, however diverse, with mutual common ground. A ground that happens to span and enhance many distinct, very different musical spheres, disciplines and forms of expression, no matter how disparate.

So over the course of this evening in question, you can only imagine my joy at witnessing a most personal and heartfelt reunion of John sir McLaughlin with Matthew Garrison and Dennis Chambers, my delight that my friend the great lead alto player of the NDR Bigband Fiete Felsch showed up from Hamburg, along with (in NYC) the genius orchestrator Dale Wilson (who so poignantly orchestrated my compositions for a program I presented for the band just a few years ago). I thought I recognised the great Robby Ameen in attendance there at some point, my close friend the incredible Mark (Level 42) King came on board, my great brother from the 4th Dimension Ranjit Barot was there, not to mention my huge, dear friend (partner and co-conspirator throughout so many years with Allan Holdsworth) Jimmy Johnson was also in attendance! Later on, another great friend, legendary musician and recent musical colleague Chick Corea graced us with his colossal presence. There were many others I’m forgetting to mentioning here who I am also touched to note felt to drop by during the conversation - from colleagues, friends and acquaintances joining all the great musicians (including Markus himself) making this truly one of the most eventful highlights of the year for me.

So here now, with this release, you can witness how it all unfolded and played out yourself! It’s my hope you get as much joy from it as I did, since this certainly was an evening I will recollect and cherish with fondness for many years to come.

Thanks to everyone!
