In 2004 I was awarded a most coveted position of being funded to write for and to tour an ensemble of my imagination and desire. This was by way of the incredible Contemporary Music Network that was - an organisation housed within The Arts Council of Great Britain that was set up in 1971 to fund UK tours by some of the most innovative and interesting musical artists.

I was blessed to get the opportunity and I remember the incredible sense of anticipation and intense excitement as I wrote and set my imagination to work.

I’d thought of an angle. I was going to celebrate and evoke three legendary yet fairly disparate artists who I regarded as game-changers in music - people who went against the grain and avoided the typical or conventional at all costs. They were Burt Bacharach, Björk and John McLaughlin.

The second half of the concert was devoted to a suite I wrote inspired by buildings and their architecture, past and present. This I had named The Stone Souls. The encore consisted of a somewhat angular arrangement of a Hank Levy composition named “Chiapas” which I heard the Stan Kenton Orchestra play when I was 12.

Throughout the material I wrote (in the grand tradition established by Duke Ellington) directly for the players concerned and with them in mind.

The “front line” consisted of what was to me a most intriguing blend to write for - violin, trumpet and trombone. And the players I refer to need no introduction from me. For violin there was nobody for me but the one and only Jerry Goodman from The Mahavishnu Orchestra. On trumpet my legendary friend Randy Brecker, and playing trombone, a blazing and every bit as riveting new star; Elliot Mason.

For the rhythm section I wanted New York all the way. I was long an admirer of the work of keyboardist Jim Beard and bassist Matthew Garrison and ran it by them. I knew Jim and Matthew’s stellar work with John McLaughlin’s Heart Of Things band and I knew they were tight together. For percussion I called on someone also close to Jim and Matthew; Arto Tunçboyaciyan - who’s amazing work I had heard with the Joe Zawinul Syndicate.

Aware as I was of them all equally as unique and compelling improvisers, I set out to create my compositional vehicles with plenty of interactional and improvisational space for them all to feel comfortable and have room to play. And after one brief afternoon’s rehearsal we set about the this hugely memorable tour.

In 2005 we got the band together for another tour, but in a way it had all been said the year before. And from the 2004 tour there was audio of the shows that I’ve had stowed away for many years. I thought it would be a great opportunity to make them available now.

The band’s Royal Festival Hall concert, (only our second!) was filmed for a (now long ago deleted) video release by a company named RSJ Groove, and some highlights of that film can be seen at my official YouTube channel.

I hope very much you enjoy some of the selected clips from the concerts that I’ve compiled here. I’ve had a lot of joy hearing it all again myself.
