Peter Jones Three beautiful examples of the drum solo, with expressive and inventive uses of the instrument to its full extent - and beyond. Favorite track: The Bells, Pt. 2 (May 5th, 1990).

dr. reckefuss IMHO these are three historic musical documents and it is great that master G.H. releases them. The energy, the urge, the sound are part of the DNA of I.O.U., shipping in the fairway of "Lifetime" (Letters of M.). I think, since 1969 the drum solo has always been the highlight of concerts in this supergroup-paradigm and what master G.H. has done here is extreme mountain climbing - in contrast to the few drummers capable to play above 8k only wearing a speedo and without an oxygen mask. Favorite track: The Bells, Pt. 3 (May 6th, 1990).

about

In 2003 Allan Holdsworth released “Then!” - a live album collated from three nights of recorded performance of us during our May Golden Week residency at Tokyo’s legendary Pit Inn jazz club in 1990. The group also featured Steve Hunt on keyboards and Jimmy Johnson on bass, and the material comprised of staple Allan compositions of the time punctuated by completely improvised performances by the group.

However, documented along with all the band performances were three standalone drum solos from those nights, which have not been aired or made public until now. These very nice sounding rough mixes were recorded and transferred to DAT by Robert Feist so each of us could have a reference copy, and since they represent a particular period of my development - in addition to the fact I’m quite fond of them - I’m really happy to make them available now.

What makes these abstract-style improvised solos distinct is the fact I had an experimental toms setup going at that time, which I’d christened The Inverted Kit. This rig required a necessary whole new logic to play, but most interestingly it opened up many creative possibilities and opportunities not accessible to me on a regularly ascending and descending kit setup. As a result, these recordings (along with my participation on Allan’s “Wardencliffe Tower” and Level 42’s “Staring At The Sun” recorded around that same period) reveal played combinations and patterns that are somewhat impractical and in many cases unachievable on a conventional drum kit setup.

The image below (taken later on Pearl drums) reveals the configuration, while the main snap of myself with Yamaha’s Takashi “Hagi” Hagiwara and Jeffrey Ocheltree (my tech on the tour) was taken at the site of the recordings back in 1990.

I hope you enjoy these solos from then!
